Yard Goat Driver
EPSJob Overview We are seeking a motivated and dependable Yard Goat Driver to join our logistics team. In this vital role, you will operate specialized yard trucks, commonly known as yard goats or shunt trucks, to efficiently move trailers within the yard and connect them to tractor-trailers for over-the-road transportation. Your expertise will ensure seamless trailer management, safe handling of freight, and adherence to all safety and regulatory standards. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be a key player in our supply chain operations, supporting timely deliveries and maintaining smooth yard flow. Responsibilities Safely operate yard trucks, including manual transmission models, to move trailers within the yard area. Connect and disconnect trailers from tractor units, ensuring secure coupling and proper trailer placement. Load and unload freight from refrigerated trailers, flatbeds, tankers, or other specialized equipment following proper cargo handling procedures. Use GPS navigation systems to accurately navigate yard routes and assist with route driving for trailer positioning. Comply with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations, DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations, and hazardous materials regulations when handling dangerous goods or hazardous materials. Perform routine inspections of yard trucks for mechanical issues and report maintenance needs promptly. Follow all safety protocols during manual handling of cargo and trailer movements to prevent accidents or injuries. Assist with logistics cargo handling tasks, including securing freight and ensuring proper load distribution in compliance with safety standards. Skills Proven experience in commercial truck driving, especially tractor-trailer or yard truck operations. Familiarity with refrigerated trailers, flatbeds, tankers, and other specialized freight equipment. Knowledge of over-the-road (OTR) driving routes and route driving best practices. Ability to operate manual transmission trucks confidently and safely. Understanding of FMCSA regulations, DOT regulations, hazardous materials regulations, and dangerous goods handling procedures. Skilled in truck loading and unloading techniques for freight of various types. Experience with GPS navigation systems for route planning and yard management. Strong manual handling skills with attention to safety during cargo movement tasks. Excellent driving skills with a clean driving record; delivery driver experience is a plus. Ability to work efficiently in fast-paced logistics environments while maintaining safety standards.
