About the role The Utility Operator (UO) is a member of the Operations Department and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, inspection, cleaning, and housekeeping of equipment throughout the Residue Storage and Processing Building (RSPB) and other assigned areas of the facility. The Utility Operator supports the operation of ash handling, residue processing, and metal recovery systems while identifying and reporting equipment issues and maintaining a safe and clean work environment. Key Responsibilities Operate, monitor, and inspect ash handling, residue processing, and metal recovery equipment. Perform routine inspections of conveyors, magnets, non-ferrous recovery equipment, screens, crushers, ash conditioning equipment, and related systems. Monitor equipment for abnormal conditions, blockages, buildup, leaks, noise, vibration, or other issues and report them to the Shift Supervisor. Perform routine cleaning and housekeeping of equipment and work areas, including maintaining 5S standards. Assist with routine maintenance activities and work evolutions. Participate in boiler cleanings, outages, shutdowns, and other plant work evolutions. Follow all operating procedures, safety procedures, LOTO requirements, and environmental requirements. Complete operating logs, inspections, checklists, and required documentation. Complete required Reworld training and qualify as an Equipment Operator within the assigned timelines. Work closely with Operations and Maintenance personnel to support safe and reliable plant operation. Perform other duties as directed by the Shift Supervisor. Position Requirements Valid 4th Class Operating Engineer Certificate of Qualification is required. High school diploma or GED preferred. Previous industrial, manufacturing, power generation, or waste-to-energy experience is an asset. Ability to read and understand technical procedures, operating instructions, maintenance instructions, and safety procedures. Ability to use a computer and complete online training. Mechanical aptitude and ability to identify and communicate equipment issues. Strong commitment to safety, housekeeping, and environmental compliance. Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and planned outages as required. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Exposure to high temperatures, outdoor weather conditions, noise, dust, and industrial environments. Work around moving machinery, conveyors, and other industrial equipment. Ability to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection where required. Ability to climb ladders and structures and work at heights. Frequently required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach.
