For Examinations: The eligible list resulting from the examination will be established in accordance with the final earned numerical ratings of passing candidates regardless of residence. A municipality or district may exercise its right under section 23-4-a. of Civil Service Law to request a certification of eligible candidates who have been residents of that municipality or district for at least one month prior to appointment. After the names of residents have been exhausted, Tompkins County must then certify the names of non-residents on the list. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Employees of this class operate and drive a truck and perform a variety of normal recurring tasks in connection with these operations. General supervision if received from a superior, but truck drivers are responsible for the safe and economical operation and care of their vehicles on assigned tasks. The incumbent will perform all related duties as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Operates a truck in connection with the collection of garbage, refuse, ashes, and snow, and in the transportation of men and materials such as sand, stone, gravel, dirt, and various supplies; Performs manual labor, such as loading trucks, digging ditches, erecting snow fences, trimming bushes, and cleaning culverts; May lubricate truck and perform minor mechanical adjustments and repairs; May be requested to supervise a work crew. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the operation of trucks and other similar automotive equipment; Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; Mechanical aptitude, industry, and dependability; Willingness to work under all weather conditions; The employee's physical condition shall be commensurate with the demands of the position.
