Description of Work

To improve and provide a safe highway system which includes installing traffic and erosion control devices; operating a variety of hand and power tools, Performing various maintenance repairs/upgrades to the highway system, including but not limited to pavement, shoulders, ditches/drainage facilities, vegetation control, litter/debris removal, snow and ice control/removal, and other emergency situations as may be required. As experience, ability, and Department needs mandate, individual will operate a wide variety of equipment, ranging from single axle dump trucks and loaders to graders, excavators, and other more complex pieces., Equipment and assignment complexity will vary dependent on employee progression from TW I to TW V.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Gaston County. This position will report to the Gaston County Maintenance Office. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe.  This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency callback situations and scheduled night work.

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC05 / 33,902.00 – 59,327.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
