As part of that effort, we’re looking to add a Transportation Supervisor who will join the team to help shape our operations from day one and ensure our drivers and customers receive the exceptional service Van Eerden is known for.

Who We Are

We’re a fourth-generation, family-owned distributor based in Grand Rapids, MI and we’re growing! Rooted in quality and service for over 100 years, we deliver Fresh Ideas, Fresh Products, and Fresh Solutions every day. At Van Eerden, you’re joining more than a food company, you’re joining a family that values its people and customers equally. You’ll enjoy competitive pay, strong benefits, and the stability of a company that truly puts people first.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform staffing duties including hiring, training, supervising, and disciplining (up to and including termination) using coaching and counseling techniques.
  • Ride with drivers and/or meet them en route to identify areas for improvement in efficiency, safety, quality, and customer service.
  • Ensure DOT compliance for all drivers, including logs, drug testing, hours of service, and equipment compliance. Review CSA scores quarterly and communicate results to drivers.
  • Work with the Safety Director to investigate all accidents, incidents, and property damage involving drivers. Including completing accident reports and necessary follow-up.
  • Improve driver performance in safety, quality, efficiency, customer service, and reliability to meet or exceed benchmarking goals.
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained and that drivers report issues using Vehicle Condition Reports.
  • Complete injury reports and investigations for work-related injuries.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for all drivers.
  • Investigate and resolve transportation-related customer issues as they arise.

 What You’ll Impact

Transportation Supervisors are expected to drive improvements across the Transportation Team. This list is not all-inclusive and may evolve with business needs:

  • Reduce work-related injuries and accidents.
  • Improve delivery accuracy and quality.
  • Achieve improvements in transportation expenses as a percentage of sales.
  • Manage drive time and service time to maximize efficiency.
  • Oversee training related to food safety, product integrity, HACCP, DOT regulatory requirements, and any additional training needed to meet department goals.
  • Train drivers in all Van Eerden best-practice delivery procedures and ensure expectations are met.
  • Ensure drivers are fully trained on all deployed technology (onboard systems, handheld scanners) and are entering data correctly.
  • Review data and coach driver behavior based on insights obtained.

 What You Bring

A strong customer service mindset is essential. This role requires solid knowledge of safe driving techniques, company policies and procedures, and full compliance with DOT and other regulatory requirements. Candidates must hold a valid Class A CDL with a Doubles Endorsement and current medical card, be able to pass a DOT drug screen and background check (no felonies) and bring previous leadership experience along with strong communication and interpersonal skills. Familiarity with foodservice delivery techniques, routing systems, on-board technology, handheld devices, and transportation management tools is required, with foodservice delivery experience preferred. Delivery travel will be required.
