Transportation Engineer Tech I

Performs basic drafting, calculations and field work.  Learns basic design procedures and techniques.  Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Engineer Tech II

Performs intermediate design work and calculations; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties Transportation Engineer Tech I:

  • Performs basic design work.
  • Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments.
  • Prepares field notes.
  • Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
  • Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
  • Works on reproduction of plans.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Duties Transportation Engineer Tech II - Same responsibilities above plus the following:

  • Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
  • Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
  • Performs intermediate design work.
  • Prepares environmental documents.
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Schedules, coordinates and prepares documents for public hearings.
  • Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.

Salary Range for each position level:

Transportation Engineer Tech I - A16 - $40,918 - $61,130
Transportation Engineer Tech II - A18 - $45,521 - $71,055

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Transportation Engineer Tech I & II

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. 

Experience:

Transportation Engineer Tech I

NONE (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Engineer Tech II

2 YEAR Drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Building construction and contractor field procedures.

Proficient skill in

  • Performing basic design and drafting.

Transportation Engineer Tech II 

Considerable knowledge of

  • Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures.
  • Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures.
  • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities.
  • Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments.
  • Higher mathematics.

Proficient skill in

  • Performing advanced drafting.
  • Performing basic design and drafting.
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.

Ability to

  • Follow verbal and written instructions.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Transportation Engineer Tech I & II

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Medium work\: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
