JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title Tech Level II — Tractor/Trailer Technician Position Summary Under general supervision, the Tech Level II Tractor/Trailer Technician performs preventive maintenance and accurate diagnosis and repair on tractors and trailers in accordance with work orders, DOT regulations, and company safety standards. The ideal candidate is a skilled, safety-minded technician with strong diagnostic ability who works efficiently with limited supervision and contributes to an organized, well-run shop. Maintenance and Repair Perform preventive maintenance on tractors and trailers to maintain compliance with DOT regulations and company safety standards. Diagnose problem areas and identify needed maintenance from work orders, driver reports, and inspection findings. Diagnose and repair brake systems, including air brake chambers and ABS. Perform engine and transmission diagnostics and repairs. Diagnose and repair air conditioning systems. Diagnose and repair aftertreatment systems, including DEF and DPF. Service and repair wheel bearings, wheel seals, and tires. Repair trailer components, including dollies, doors, door seals, and lights. Perform tractor and trailer body repair, including minor damage repair and welding on aluminum and steel. Install and repair satellite communication units and cameras. Diagnose and repair lane departure and related safety systems. Align axles as needed. Document completed work, parts used, and diagnostic findings accurately and legibly on work orders. Shop Operations and Safety Maintain a clean, organized work area and support the overall organization of the shop. Follow proper shop procedures as directed by management, and work in a safe and efficient manner. Follow all company safety policies and applicable OSHA requirements, including the use of required personal protective equipment. Handle, store, and dispose of waste oil, coolant, refrigerant, batteries, and other regulated materials in accordance with company procedure and applicable environmental regulations. Assist other shop staff with maintenance as needed. Perform various ground and property maintenance as needed. Support and Development Assist drivers with questions concerning tractor and trailer repair, and direct drivers to the appropriate department as requested. Participate in departmental training on updated repair procedures, safety awareness, and equipment changes. Maintain required certifications and qualifications current. Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned. Qualifications Required High school diploma or GED. Two or more years of Class 8 maintenance experience. Ability to read, interpret, and complete work orders. Possession of a roll tool chest and personal hand tools. Valid driver’s license. Preferred Technical or vocational training in diesel or heavy truck technology. Detroit certification in one or more medium/heavy truck categories. EPA Section 609 certification for motor vehicle air conditioning service. Qualification as a brake inspector under 49 CFR 396.25, and as an annual inspector under 49 CFR 396.19. Welding experience on both aluminum and steel. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong diagnostic ability across tractor and trailer systems, including air brakes, electrical, engine, transmission, HVAC, and aftertreatment. Working knowledge of DOT and FMCSA maintenance and inspection requirements. Proficiency with diagnostic software, hand tools, and shop equipment. Ability to work safely and efficiently with limited supervision. High attention to detail and accuracy in repair work and documentation. Ability to prioritize and complete multiple work orders in a fast-paced shop environment. Clear verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain repair issues to drivers and management. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team.
