Safety Manager (Transportation & Industrial Operations)
ConfidentialPosition Overview We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Safety Manager to oversee and continuously improve safety performance across our transportation fleet and industrial operations in Hamilton, Ontario. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in commercial trucking, a valid Ontario AZ driver's licence and a minimum of 1 million miles of professional commercial driving experience. This is not strictly an administrative safety position. We require someone who understands the realities of operating commercial vehicles, can conduct driver road tests, investigate incidents, work directly with drivers and management, and implement practical improvements that reduce accidents, improve compliance and increase operational efficiency. The successful candidate must be highly organized, computer proficient, an excellent communicator and capable of managing both field-level safety activities and detailed administrative reporting. Key Responsibilities 1. Fleet Safety & Driver Management Conduct road tests and practical driving evaluations for new and existing commercial drivers. Perform regular driver observations, ride-along and field safety assessments. Identify unsafe driving behaviours and develop corrective actions, coaching and retraining programs. Work closely with Operations Management to improve driver performance, safety standards and fleet efficiency. Monitor driver compliance with company policies, operating procedures and applicable transportation regulations. Develop and recommend updated driving procedures and operational improvements based on field observations. Promote a safety-first culture while maintaining an understanding of operational demands. 2. Accident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis Lead and coordinate investigations into vehicle accidents, workplace incidents, near misses and safety-related complaints. Complete detailed incident reports, including supporting photographs, statements, documentation and recommendations. Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) using methods such as fishbone diagrams, the 5 Whys and other recognized investigation techniques. Identify contributing factors, underlying causes and opportunities for prevention. Work collaboratively with Operations Management and Human Resources to establish corrective and preventative actions. Track investigation findings and ensure corrective actions are completed and properly documented. Provide high-level incident summaries and recommendations to senior management. 3. Fleet Monitoring & Safety Technology Utilize fleet management platforms such as Motive and KeepTruckin to monitor driver behaviour, vehicle activity and overall fleet safety performance. Review fleet safety scorecards, driving events, vehicle data and safety trends. Identify high-risk drivers, recurring violations and opportunities for improvement. Prepare weekly and monthly reports highlighting safety performance, incident trends, corrective actions and opportunities for improvement. Recommend improvements to fleet safety monitoring systems, processes and reporting. Work with Operations Management to establish measurable safety targets and performance indicators. 4. Compliance, CVOR & Regulatory Matters Support compliance with Ontario's Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration (CVOR) requirements, Highway Traffic Act and other applicable transportation and workplace safety regulations. Monitor CVOR performance, violations, inspections and opportunities to improve the company's safety record. Review minor transportation infractions, tickets and compliance matters. Attend court or regulatory proceedings when required and, where legally permitted, represent or support the company in defending minor CVOR-related charges and infractions.
