The position is responsible for diagnosing, repairing and maintaining waste collection trucks and related equipment. As a Refuse Diesel Mechanic, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring safety, efficiency, and longevity for our assets. Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues. Repair diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, and suspension systems. Inspect vehicles to identify needed repairs and safety concerns. Maintain and repair hydraulic systems, compactors, and other refuse truck equipment. Perform oil changes, fluid checks, and other preventative maintenance. Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify and resolve mechanical issues. Complete work orders and document all repairs and maintenance. Actively participate in safety or educational training as required. Other responsibilities as required. Qualifications: Candidates must have a high school diploma, or equivalent. Previous diesel mechanic or heavy-duty vehicle repair experience preferred. Experience working on garbage trucks or refuse vehicles preferred. Must have an appropriate mechanic’s tool set. Must have excellent communication skills, bringing demonstrated abilities of building solid relationships with superiors, peers, and subordinates. Subject to a DOT physical exam and DOT drug testing. DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including marijuana, for any reason. Physical Requirements: The essential functions of this position require the ability to: Intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, crouching, walking, lifting of light and heavy objects, climbing ladders/stairs/ramps or scaffolding, and using tools and equipment that require a high degree of manual dexterity. Required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel, talk, hear, to reach with hands or arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and smell. Must be able to lay on back on a mechanic’s dolly to work underneath motor vehicle equipment. Must regularly lift and/or move up to fifty pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than one hundred pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Withstand heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job; tolerate exposure to considerable amounts of dust, vehicle fumes and noise.
