Product Designer II
BLOXBLOX is a Design-Manufacture-Construct (DMC) company headquartered in Bessemer, Alabama. We design and build modular buildings, building components and sub-assemblies as products in a controlled factory environment, then deliver and install them in the field. This approach lets us move faster, hold tighter quality, and build more predictably than traditional construction. Our vision is to create a DMC industry, without silos, that does more with less, beautifully. What You’ll Design This is not consumer electronics or automotive design, but design of products for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industry (AEC). We design for mission-critical facilities, healthcare and other industries, manufacture in our Bessemer factory, and deliver to building sites around the country. These products are designed, engineered, fabricated, and assembled at our facility, so every design decision must work on the shop floor as well as during transportation and in the clients’ finished space off site. Position Summary The Product Designer II – Design for Manufacturing turns product concepts into production-ready designs. You’ll join the MODS team during a new product launch team and help shape the product’s architecture, usability, configuration, and materials. You’ll also produce the models, drawings, and documentation our factory uses to build it and collaborate with the team to continuously improve the process. This role connects design intent with manufacturability, cost, and quality. Key Responsibilities Develop new product concepts and refine existing designs for usability, configuration, materials, and cost. Build and maintain complete, current 3D models and production drawings for assigned products. Produce fabrication files, specification sheets, and bills of material (BOMs) before release to production. Apply design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly principles so products are efficient to build, inspect, and install. Make material and component choices that balance performance, cost, availability, and manufacturability. Own design change control: document revisions and keep models, drawings, and BOMs traceable and aligned. Work daily with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and program management to resolve build issues and feed lessons back into the design. Track design-input errors, rework, scrap, and production delays tied to design, then lead continuous-improvement actions to reduce them. Support prototyping, first-article builds, and product launch readiness. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience. 3–6 years of experience designing physical products for production in a manufacturing environment. Strong 3D CAD skills (Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar) and the ability to produce complete production drawings. Hands-on experience creating and maintaining BOMs and managing engineering change control. Working knowledge of DfM/DfA, fabrication methods (sheet metal, structural steel, welding, fastening), and tolerancing. Ability to work on the shop floor with production teams to solve problems in real time. Preferred Qualifications Industrial design background, including concept development, ergonomics, and user-centered design for physical products. Experience with modular, prefabricated, or offsite construction products, or other configurable built products) Familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM)/Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Experience supporting a new product launch from concept through production. Exposure to Revit or other building information modeling (BIM) tools. Work Environment On-site at our Bessemer, AL facility, splitting time between the design office and the manufacturing floor. Must be able to walk the production floor and…
