Parts & Shipping Clerk

About the role Alton Industries is hiring a Parts & Shipping Clerk for our Customer Service team. You will run the parts counter and the shipping bench — pulling orders, checking part numbers and getting shipments out the door. You are the last set of eyes on an order before it ships. A good part of what leaves here goes overseas, so we are especially interested in people who have handled international shipments — but we will teach the paperwork to the right person. You will work on-site at our West Chicago facility alongside our order processing and warehouse teams. What you'll do Pick, pack and ship customer parts orders through UPS and FedEx, domestic and international Verify part numbers against the pick list and packing slip before anything ships Prepare international paperwork — commercial invoices and customs documentation Receive inbound shipments, check them against purchase orders and packing slips, and flag discrepancies the same day Stock and organize parts on the shelves, and keep bin locations and labels accurate Run cycle counts and help keep on-hand quantities honest Operate a forklift and pallet jack to move and stage material Enter shipping, receiving and inventory transactions in our system Work with order processing, purchasing and customer service on order status and delivery issues Keep the shipping area clean, organized and safe What you need High school diploma or GED Accuracy with part numbers — you can match a long alphanumeric part number against a pick list without transposing characters, and you double-check rather than assume Experience shipping through UPS and/or FedEx , including generating labels and tracking shipments Comfort with Microsoft Outlook and Excel , and with entering transactions in a computer-based inventory or order system Parts or materials inventory experience — stocking, shelf organization, cycle counts Willingness to be trained and certified on a forklift. We certify every operator on our own equipment, so you do not need to arrive with a card Able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally and 20–30 lbs frequently, and to stand, walk, bend and reach for most of a shift, with or without reasonable accommodation Strong attention to detail — you complete tasks accurately and efficiently, and you catch your own mistakes before someone downstream does Dependable attendance, and the ability to multitask and prioritize when several orders are moving at once in a fast-paced environment What would make you stand out International shipping is the part of this job we most want help with. Any of the following is a real plus: Preparing commercial invoices, packing lists or certificates of origin Harmonized tariff (HTS) classification Filing electronic export information through AES, or working alongside a customs broker Working knowledge of Incoterms — the practical difference between DDP, EXW and FOB Time spent at a freight forwarder, customs broker or 3PL, or at a manufacturer or distributor that ships abroad regularly FedEx International, UPS Worldwide or DHL Express experience Hazmat / dangerous goods (IATA or DOT) shipping certification Also helpful: Forklift operating experience A background in parts distribution, industrial supply, or an equipment dealership RF scanner or barcode experience ERP or WMS experience — NetSuite especially Conversational Spanish Schedule Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a one-hour unpaid lunch. No nights, no weekends, no holidays. Opportunities for overtime are available. Overtime is paid at time and a half for hours over 40 in a week, and is offered as volume requires, rather than guaranteed.
