Maintenance Technician - Trailer Repair
Smurfit WestrockCareer Opportunity: The Trailer Repair Technician performs inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of company trailers and related equipment. The position supports safe, reliable fleet operations by completing quality repairs, documenting work accurately, and maintaining a clean and organized work area. . Essential Job Functions: Safety Support company safety initiatives and programs. Maintain compliance with applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations at all times. Use required personal protective equipment and follow lockout/tagout, fall protection, lifting, welding, and hot-work procedures as applicable. Inspect tools and equipment before use, report unsafe conditions, and immediately communicate hazards, incidents, or equipment concerns to supervision. Maintain a clean, orderly work area and properly store tools, parts, welding supplies, and hazardous materials. Trailer Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and Department of Transportation-style trailer inspections in accordance with company requirements and applicable regulations. Diagnose and repair trailer mechanical, structural, electrical, air-brake, and suspension systems. Repair or replace brakes, wheel-end components, air lines, valves, lights, wiring, landing gear, doors, hinges, latches, mud flaps, flooring, roofing, side panels, and related components. Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and structural repairs when qualified and authorized. Inspect tires, wheels, rims, hubs, bearings, and seals; identify damage or excessive wear and coordinate corrective action. Conduct operational checks after repairs to verify that equipment is safe, functional, and ready for service. Complete road-service or yard repairs as assigned while following established safety and traffic-control practices. Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend practical preventive or corrective improvements. Documentation and Parts Control Accurately document inspections, repairs, labor, parts used, equipment condition, and follow-up needs in the maintenance system or required forms. Communicate equipment status, repair priorities, parts needs, and estimated return-to-service information to the Fleet Manager and operations team. Maintain accountability for assigned tools and equipment and assist with parts inventory organization and control. Follow procedures for removing unsafe equipment from service and clearly identifying equipment awaiting repair. Perform other job duties as needed. What You Need to Succeed: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. One or more years of trailer, truck, heavy-equipment, automotive, industrial maintenance, welding, or related mechanical experience preferred. Working knowledge of trailer air-brake, electrical, suspension, wheel-end, and structural systems preferred. Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, jacks, stands, lifting devices, and welding or fabrication equipment as assigned. Ability to read work orders, inspection forms, service information, measurements, and equipment identification numbers. Basic computer or mobile-device skills for maintenance documentation and parts tracking. Valid driver license and acceptable driving record may be required for road-service or equipment-movement duties. Ability to communicate effectively, work independently, prioritize repairs, and cooperate with drivers, dispatch, operations, and maintenance team members. Welding certification, brake inspector qualification, or other applicable technical certifications are preferred but not required unless assigned duties require them. Physical Requirements: Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, pull, and work beneath or around trailers.
