Job Description: SUMMARY This is journey level work performing complex repairs and maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Maintains gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, electrical, and other automotive systems in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations and requirements and departmental procedures. Provides roadside assistance and emergency repairs outside of garage. Provides preventive maintenance and fueling services in the field. Performs road tests and operational checks of vehicles and equipment before and after repairs, modifications, and service. Ensures proper preventive maintenance service is performed in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations and requirements. Ensures tools, equipment and garage area are clean and orderly maintained. Enters maintenance data into the Fleet Management Information System. Creates and completes work orders. Enters notes and comments. Requests parts as required. Attends work on continuous and regular basis. NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS May operate a fuel/lube/service or tow truck. May deliver motor vehicles to dealerships/vendors for specialized maintenance and warranty repairs. May shape, design, and weld equipment and materials on occasion. Attends training seminars as needed. May train or provide assistance to less experienced technicians or other positions as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, supplemented by automotive technology or diesel mechanic technical courses by an accredited vocational-technical institution, and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in repairing motor vehicles and/or equipment. Desire work experience with municipal and utilities fleet vehicles and equipment, including public safety (police and fire).
