Fleet Mechanic - Parker Tree Service Location: Caldwell yard and shop, 3214 E Homedale Rd Type: Full-time, year-round. The fleet mechanic keeps every truck, crane, lift, chipper, grinder and loader safe and running, so our crews leave the yard on time and get the job done. Why this role matters: A tree crew can only work when its equipment does. When a chipper is down or a truck won't start, three people stand in the yard and a customer waits. You are the person who keeps that from happening. We run about 60 units out of our Caldwell yard: three cranes, bucket trucks and a spider lift, chippers, stump grinders, loaders, dump and chip trucks, pickups and trailers. Most of it runs on diesel and hydraulics, and most of it works hard every day. Parker Tree Service is family-owned and has been doing tree work since 1937. People call us because they trust the name. Part of that trust is a crew that shows up on the day we said, with equipment that is safe to work under. This is a hands-on job with a real say in it. You help decide what gets fixed first, what we fix in our own shop and what goes to a dealer. We judge the job on equipment that is ready, repairs that stay fixed, and a maintenance record anyone can read. What you'll do: Ten things, starting with the one that prevents the other nine. Keep the maintenance schedule. Service every unit on time: oil, filters, fluids, grease, belts, knives and teeth. Planned work comes first, because an hour in the shop beats a lost day in the field. Find the problem and fix it. Track down engine, hydraulic, electrical and air brake faults on trucks and machines, with a fault code or without one. Fix it right the first time. Work on our diesel trucks. Service, air and hydraulic brakes, steering and suspension, lights and wiring, charging systems, tires and wheels. On the newer diesels, that includes exhaust filter, exhaust fluid and exhaust gas recirculation faults. Work on hydraulics. Leaks, hoses and fittings, pumps, power take-offs, cylinders and control valves on cranes, lifts, dump bodies, chippers and loaders. Build replacement hoses yourself instead of waiting on a parts run. Keep the chippers and stump grinders cutting. Knives and anvils, feed wheels, clutches and belts, bearings, cutter teeth and pockets. Test every feed control bar and safety stop, and fix any that fails before the machine leaves the yard. Look after the cranes and lifts. Daily and monthly checks, grease, hydraulic service, radio remotes, outrigger and overload faults. Structural damage to a boom gets tagged out and goes to the dealer. Keep the trucks inspected. Get every truck ready for its annual inspection, or do the inspection yourself if you are qualified. Fix what the crews write up on their pre-trip checks. Keep the record. Log every repair and service against the unit's number in our fleet maintenance system, with hours or miles, parts and time. Read every hour meter and odometer each month. † Run the parts and the outside work. Find and order the right part and keep the common ones on the shelf. Work out with the fleet manager what goes to a dealer or an outside shop, and check that work when it comes back. Back up the crews. Take breakdown calls from the field and get the crew moving again. Repair the saws and small equipment they bring in. Weld guards, brackets and chip boxes when they need it. What you bring (must-have / nice-to-have): Nine must-haves, and a list that helps. Must have: 5 or more years fixing diesel trucks or heavy equipment for a living. Strong hydraulics. You can read a diagram, find the fault and fix it. Hydraulic hose building. You can cut, crimp and fit a hose yourself. Welding. You can make sound repairs to guards, brackets and chip boxes, and do light fabrication. Air brakes, electrical work and diesel engine diagnostics, with a scan tool or a laptop. The judgment to work a problem alone, and to know when to stop and call the dealer. A valid driver's license and a driving rec…
