Director of Operations
Wilson Plumbing ServiceWilson Plumbing Service is a growing mechanical contracting company specializing in new construction across Ontario. Our projects range from commercial and industrial developments to hotels, multi-residential buildings, and large-scale high-rise construction. We currently have approximately 70 mechanical tradespeople working across multiple projects, supported by a lean office team consisting of project management, estimating, purchasing, BIM coordination, fabrication, and administration. We've grown significantly over the past several years, and we're looking for an experienced Director of Operations to help us manage that growth and take our operations to the next level. We're not looking for someone to simply oversee what's happening today. We need someone who can plan what's happening next month, six months from now, and beyond. The Opportunity We're looking for a hands-on Director of Operations who can take ownership of our day-to-day operations, bring structure to our scheduling and planning, and ensure our field and office teams are working together efficiently. This position will work directly with ownership and serve as a key link between our project managers, foremen, purchasing department, and field crews. Our biggest priority is forward planning . With multiple large projects running simultaneously, we need someone who can look ahead, understand upcoming manpower requirements, identify potential conflicts, and ensure the right people, materials, and resources are available when needed. Too much of our time is currently spent reacting to problems that could have been identified weeks or months earlier. We're looking for someone who can change that. The right candidate will have the experience and confidence to make decisions, hold people accountable, improve our internal processes, and take ownership of operational performance without requiring constant direction. Key Responsibilities Project Scheduling & Manpower Planning This will be one of the most important aspects of the position. Develop and maintain a company-wide master construction schedule covering all active and upcoming projects. Forecast manpower requirements weeks and months in advance, accounting for project milestones, workload changes, and upcoming project starts. Coordinate the allocation of approximately 70 field employees across multiple construction sites. Work closely with project managers and foremen to develop realistic short-term and long-term labour plans. Identify scheduling conflicts, labour shortages, and potential project delays before they impact operations. Monitor project progress against schedules and make adjustments to keep projects moving. Lead regular scheduling and manpower meetings with the project management team. Assist with planning future hiring requirements based on projected workloads. Field Operations & Leadership Provide day-to-day operational leadership to our field teams and foremen. Establish clear expectations for productivity, communication, scheduling, and accountability. Maintain regular communication with foremen to understand jobsite progress, challenges, and upcoming requirements. Work with foremen to improve crew efficiency, coordination, and overall project execution. Help develop stronger field leadership through coaching, mentoring, and performance management. Address operational issues proactively rather than allowing them to escalate to ownership. Ensure consistent communication between the office and field. Project Oversight & Financial Performance Work alongside project managers to ensure projects are progressing according to schedule, budget, and contractual requirements. Review labour performance, productivity, and project cost reports to identify areas requiring attention. Help establish realistic project budgets and labour forecasts during project startup. Monitor project profitability and work with the team to address cost overruns. Ensure project managers are staying ahead of change orders, RFIs…
