The Log Truck Driver is a hands-on role responsible for operating heavy-duty tri-axle log trucks to transport sawlogs safely between local logging sites, company yards, and processing mills. Key Responsibilities · Log Transportation: Safely operate a commercial log truck over diverse terrains, including active forest service roads, state highways, and tight landing zones. · Self-Loading Operations: Safely load and unload logs using onboard self-loading equipment (loading crane/grapple), or coordinate efficiently with sawmill yard loader operators. · Load Securing: Ensure all logs are properly tiered, balanced, and securely bound using chains, cables, or wrappers according to state weight limits and transportation safety regulations. · Daily Inspections: Complete thorough pre-trip and post-trip commercial vehicle inspections (hydraulics, brakes, tires, lighting) to verify optimal mechanical safety. · Log Documentation: Maintain accurate trip sheets, scale tickets, delivery documentation, and driving hours records. · Species Identification: Learn to identify and differentiate common northeastern hardwood tree species to guarantee proper sorting during offloading. Qualifications & Skills · License: Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Required (Class A Preferred) with a clean driving history. · Experience: Minimum of 2+ years of heavy commercial truck driving experience. Prior experience hauling logs or working with self-loaders, dump trucks, or heavy machinery is highly valued. · Transmission: Proven ability to confidently operate manual transmission commercial trucks. · Physical Fitness: Ability to handle physical labor in all seasonal weather conditions. · Safety Mindset: Deep understanding of forest safety protocols and weight/height restrictions for sawlog transport. Schedule & Hours · Type: Full-time, Day shift (Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends). · Hours: Steady, consistent hours—typically averaging 50+ hours weekly with generous overtime. Early morning starts are standard.
