Buyer – Manufacturing & Supply Chain

Join a Maine manufacturer with a long history of craftsmanship CM Almy, a division of F.C. Ziegler Co., is seeking an experienced Buyer to join our team in Pittsfield, Maine. This is a hands-on purchasing role for someone who enjoys working with suppliers, analyzing inventory needs, negotiating pricing and terms, and making sound purchasing decisions that keep manufacturing moving. You’ll work closely with our Materials Manager and teams throughout the organization to ensure we have the right materials and products, at the right time, quality, and cost. The position goes beyond simply placing purchase orders. We’re looking for someone who takes ownership of their supplier relationships, understands the impact purchasing decisions have on inventory and production, and actively looks for opportunities to improve cost, quality, lead times, and sourcing. What You’ll Do As our Buyer, you will manage purchasing activities from identifying requirements and evaluating suppliers through purchase order creation, delivery, and invoice processing. Key responsibilities include: Manage the purchasing cycle from purchase order creation through receipt and payment processing. Analyze SKU reorder points, safety stock levels, lead times, and inventory requirements. Source and qualify suppliers for raw materials, finished goods, equipment, supplies, and services. Solicit bids and evaluate suppliers based on price, quality, lead time, reliability, and overall value. Negotiate pricing, purchasing terms, and delivery schedules. Build productive relationships with existing suppliers while developing new sources of supply. Monitor supplier performance and work with vendors to resolve quality and delivery concerns. Analyze costs and identify opportunities for savings and improved purchasing value. Evaluate vendor price changes and their impact on product costs. Maintain accurate inventory item and supplier information within the company's ERP system. Work with Product Management, Manufacturing, Accounting, and other departments to resolve purchasing, inventory, quality, and delivery issues. Communicate purchasing changes, anticipated stock-outs, and supply risks to appropriate team members. Support annual product cost forecasting and cross-functional improvement projects. What We’re Looking For We’re looking for a Buyer who combines strong analytical skills with good judgment, attention to detail, and a willingness to take ownership of purchasing decisions. Qualifications include: Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 5 years of professional buying experience. Manufacturing purchasing/procurement experience strongly preferred. Experience working with ERP systems and strong Microsoft Office skills. Knowledge of supplier negotiations and purchasing contracts. Understanding of inventory, accounting, and manufacturing processes. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage priorities independently. Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and follow-through. Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with outside suppliers.
