About the Position Quality Metals Recycling is seeking a motivated Scrap Metal Buyer to develop new business and manage supplier relationships throughout the Houston area. This position focuses on purchasing ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal from manufacturers, industrial facilities, contractors, demolition companies, and other commercial accounts. The ideal candidate understands scrap metal grades and pricing, negotiates effectively, and takes a hands-on approach to building a profitable book of business. Responsibilities Identify and pursue new scrap metal suppliers through prospecting, cold calling, site visits, referrals, and networking. Develop and maintain relationships with existing suppliers through consistent communication and reliable service. Evaluate scrap materials, estimate volumes, and prepare competitive purchase quotes. Negotiate pricing and purchasing terms within company guidelines and margin targets. Monitor metal markets and competitor activity to support purchasing decisions. Coordinate pickups, container placement, and transportation with dispatch and yard operations. Work with the scale and operations teams to resolve discrepancies involving weights, material grades, contamination, or pricing. Maintain accurate records of supplier contacts, quotes, purchases, and follow-up activity. Provide weekly updates on purchasing volume, margins, new accounts, and business opportunities. Follow company safety policies and scrap purchasing procedures. Qualifications Experience in scrap metal purchasing, industrial sales, recycling, or a related industry preferred. Knowledge of ferrous and nonferrous metals, including copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, and steel. Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills. Ability to calculate purchase costs, freight expenses, and profit margins. Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable prospecting for new business. Comfortable visiting industrial facilities, construction sites, and scrap yards. Basic proficiency with email, spreadsheets, and customer management software. Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel locally for supplier visits. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
