Assistant Operations Manager
ALABAMA STATE PORT AUTHORITYJob Summary Reporting to the General Manager (“GM”) of the Montgomery Inland Rail Port, this position supports the GM in directing day-to-day operations of the inland rail terminal and is responsible for the daily delivery of customer cargo, planning and strategy behind all terminal movements, and coordination with all logistical stakeholders of the Alabama Port Authority and the Montgomery Inland Rail Port. Essential Functions 1. Implements an effective and efficient intermodal operation and safe work environment while communicating safety and operational issues immediately with GM and maintenance team. 2. Coordinates daily with railroad partners, beneficial cargo owners, ocean carriers, trucking and dispatch companies, and other terminal-related operating stakeholders concerning terminal operations, cargo deliveries, rail schedules, trucking appointments, and logistical necessities. 3. Maintains, builds and tracks operational systems, Key Performance Indicators, and visual management boards. 4. Communicates daily with the maintenance team on forecasted asset needs and terminal volumes. 5. Plays a key role in software implementations from kickoff through go-live, helping define terminal business requirements, shaping system configuration and vendor training, and providing ongoing user support. 6. Verifies loaded and unloaded railcars are slotted for the correct customers on a daily basis. 7. Plans, coordinates, and communicates daily rail schedules. 8. Plans, coordinates, and communicates daily yard operational setups and planned movements. 9. Participates, drives, and carries out process improvements to raise productivity, service reliability, and customer satisfaction. 10. Communicates and works with third party chassis and container maintenance partner(s) on a preventative and necessary maintenance and repairs. 11. Supervises and schedules employees across shifts while assigning work to match volume and to control costs. 12. Trains and assists other supervisors. 13. Provides regular reports and updates to leadership. 14. Reports any logistical discrepancies, cargo or equipment damage, or housekeeping needs to the GM and/or appropriate parties. 15. Performs other duties as assigned. 16. Requires being available or on call, after hours, nights, weekends, and holidays. Physical Requirements This position requires work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including periods of standing, walking, and sitting. Work is performed in an active intermodal rail terminal environment with exposure to varying weather conditions, equipment noise, powered industrial equipment, over-the-road trucks, and rail operations. The position may occasionally require lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
