Office of the Attorney GeneralDescription The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. The Office of the Attorney General is seeking qualified applicants to serve as an Assistant Attorney General for the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT). MDOT, which includes five modal administrations along with the Maryland Transportation Authority, oversees the State's highway, transit, motor vehicle, port, and aviation operations. Attorneys supporting MDOT engage in a wide-ranging and dynamic legal practice, providing counsel on matters involving real estate, grants, public finance, procurement, personnel and EEO/employee relations, workplace safety, risk management, homeland security, Public Information Act compliance, minority business enterprise issues, and ethics. The Maryland Transit Authority (MTA) team consists of the Deputy Principal Counsel, two Senior Counsel, eight Assistant Attorney Generals, and three office support staff. This role also includes representing MDOT and its modal administrations in litigation before state and federal courts, as well as administrative agencies. The Assistant Attorney General will advise on the legality of proposed legislation, regulations, and policies, and may be called upon to support various boards and commissions. This position offers a unique opportunity to work within a complex and multifaceted agency that directly influences Maryland's transportation infrastructure and public services. Classification: Assistant Attorney General III Experience: The ideal candidate will have at least five years' legal experience, and good research, writing and communication skills. Experience real estate and commercial transactions, environmental law, and procurement, and litigation in judicial and administrative forums would be a plus. Maryland Bar or the ability to waive in is required. Pro Bono Commitment: The Office of the Attorney General expects its attorneys to demonstrate a sustained commitment to pro bono service. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of meaningful pro bono engagement or a sincere interest in pro bono work as a professional obligation. Once hired, Assistant Attorneys General are expected to fulfill that commitment throughout their employment with the Office through active participation in OAG's Stephen H. Sachs Pro Bono Program or other qualified opportunities. The OAG supports attorneys in meeting the goal set by the Maryland Supreme Court, MD Atty Rules § 19-306.1(b), by allowing up to 50 hours work-time to be used for approved pro bono activities.
