lk cargo containers. This fast-paced, highly dynamic role demands continuous spatial awareness, exceptional backing skills, and an absolute commitment to industrial safety. If you enjoy a machinery-driven environment where your physical precision prevents facility bottlenecks, this position offers unparalleled federal security and career advancement.
Key Responsibilities
• Operate industrial yard trucks and spotters safely to hitch, shuttle, and drop commercial trailers between facility staging stalls and loading dock bays
• Back heavy trailers seamlessly into narrow loading docks, ensuring perfect alignment with facility doors, bumpers, and safety locks
• Perform frequent drop-and-hook maneuvers, safely connecting and disconnecting trailer air line hoses, electrical cables, and manual landing gears
• Conduct mandatory pre-and post-shift equipment inspections on yard hostlers and trailers, documenting and reporting safety or mechanical issues instantly
• Maintain continuous, real-time communication via two-way wireless radios or onboard tracking monitors with dispatchers and dock clerks
• Cross-reference trailer identification numbers and physical security seals against yard management logs to maintain immaculate facility tracking data
What Success Looks Like
Success as a Yard Jockey balances lightning-fast turnaround times with a completely accident-free safety performance. Top performers have an excellent natural map of the facility footprint, shuffling trailers fluidly so sorting and material handling crews never experience operational downtime. You will truly excel here by keeping your cool during high-volume seasonal shipping spikes, maneuvering flawlessly through adverse weather conditions like heavy rain or snow, and maintaining absolute vigilance to protect your team on a bustling yard floor.
Requirements and Qualifications
• Must be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident alien
• Must be at least eighteen years old or sixteen years old with a high school diploma
• Ability to pass a mandatory federal background check, a standard drug screening, and a physical stamina evaluation
• Must possess a valid State Driver's License; a commercial driver's license (CDL Class A) or prior experience operating terminal yard trucks/spotters is highly preferred
• Strong depth perception and expert backing proficiency to safely navigate large commercial vehicles through strict layout clearances
• Clear verbal communication skills in English to safely coordinate vehicle movements via two-way radios and team directives

• Complete federal health insurance benefit selections including medical, dental, and vision coverage for your family
• Secured retirement futures backed by the federal employee pension network and matching thrift savings accounts
• Earned paid leave systems allowing you to accumulate personal vacation days and separate sick leave hours each pay period
• Thorough paid on the job training, yard vehicle orientations, and ongoing industrial workplace safety refreshers
• Direct promotional pathways to move up into highway transportation driving, logistics management, or fleet maintenance leadership roles
