WHITE FLEET DRIVER (STUDENT TRANSPORTATION) Job Description DEFINITION Operates District vans and other non-commercial vehicles (“white fleet”) in transporting students safely and efficiently to and from school sites, programs, activities, and appointments in accordance with District policies and applicable laws. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this classification operate District passenger vehicles that do not require a commercial school bus license. Incumbents are responsible for safe student transportation, vehicle inspections, and maintaining appropriate student conduct. This classification may serve as an entry-level transportation position for employees working toward obtaining required certifications for school bus driver positions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Drives District vans and other authorized vehicles to transport students as assigned Transports students to school, programs, work experience placements, and activities Assists in transporting students to appointments as directed Conducts required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections Maintains vehicles in a clean and safe condition Reports mechanical issues or safety concerns promptly Maintains appropriate student behavior and follows District discipline procedures Ensures all passengers use required safety restraints Provides assistance to students entering and exiting vehicles as needed Maintains transportation logs and required records Fuels vehicles and ensures vehicles are properly secured Communicates effectively with transportation staff and site administrators Follows all District safety procedures and transportation protocols May assist with other transportation support duties as assigned Maintains confidentiality of student information Administers basic first aid in emergencies if trained Attends required safety and driver training meetings Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws and District procedures LICENSE REQUIRED Valid California Driver’s License Acceptable driving record as determined by the District Valid First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain within required timeframe) DMV Medical Examiner’s Certificate may be required depending on assignment GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: California Vehicle Code provisions related to student transportation Defensive driving practices Basic vehicle safety procedures Student supervision practices District transportation safety procedures Ability to: Drive passenger vehicles safely and defensively Maintain simple transportation records Follow oral and written directions Establish positive working relationships with students and staff Maintain student confidentiality Exercise sound judgment in safety situations Meet schedules and timelines Respond appropriately in emergency situations TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Prior experience working with youth or in transportation is desirable. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: Sitting for prolonged periods while driving Ability to assist students entering and exiting vehicles Lifting/pushing/pulling normally does not exceed 40 pounds and may occasionally exceed 75 pounds with assistance Mobility to bend, reach, and twist as required Working Conditions: Work performed in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions Vision (corrected) sufficient for safe driving Consistent and reliable attendance required Noise levels may vary from moderate to loud Employee is regularly required to drive as part of job duties The information contained in this job description is for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is not an exhaustive list of duties performed.
