Warehouse Associate (Grocery Department)/ Vessel Deckhand

Soo Marine Supply, Inc . is a Ship Chandler, providing goods and services for vessels operating in the Great Lakes System. Primarily, this position involves filling orders for our customers and then assisting in the delivery of them as a deck hand on our supply vessel OJIBWAY as the ship transits the St. Mary's River. To a lesser, but still significant extent, we deliver goods and services to vessels at other ports during the year via one ton truck and box trailer requiring a Chauffeur's endorsement on your Michigan license. We provide a broad range of support services to our customers including the storage of miscellaneous items for crew members, delivery of 3rd party packages received from delivery companies (e.g., UPS, FED EX, US Postal Service, LTL etc.), draw check cashing for crew members, and free long term vehicle parking for crew members while onboard ship. SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Work for the largest and most versatile Ship Chandler on the Great Lakes. The primary function of a warehouse associate is to fill grocery orders for the freighters, be a deckhand on our supply vessel OJIBWAY, and deliver orders to other ports as needed via truck and trailer (requiring a Chauffeurs endorsement on Michigan license). Start earning sea time for every delivery. NOTE: Starting wage during brief probation period will be $16.00 / hr. Follow-on wage will be determined based on experience, additional qualifications (i.e., fork lift certifications, possess Chauffeur's license, and pass DOT background check for TWIC), high performance during probationary period, and time in position after probationary period (approx 1 month). Must be able to participate in random drug and alcohol testing program (i.e., all illicit drugs listed in 49 CFR 40.85, which includes Marijuana ) Ability to work as part of a team and on your own (i.e., during night shift filling orders and answering phone calls from customers). Ability to use mechanical lifts such as but not limited to fork lifts, hand trucks, and powered lifts. Stock and rotate goods in the appropriate areas (i.e., cooler, freezer or dry grocery department). Must be task oriented and self motivated. Assemble orders for delivery to customers by boat, or less frequently, by truck and trailer to Great Lakes ports. Work in cold/freezing temperatures for an extended period of time (i.e., walk in freezers and walk in coolers). Able to measure products (e.g., use scales, read labels, etc.). Answer phones in a customer service oriented mind set. Monitor VHF-FM radio traffic. Able to be a deck hand (e.g., mooring line handling, throwing heaving lines, assisting the crane operator with lifts, etc.). Shop for goods at local stores as needed. Assist in maintenance of the premises including painting, general clean-up, sweeping, mopping, emptying trash, and restroom cleaning. Able to work a rotating 12 hour shift, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to work both day and night shift. (i.e., 3 days on - 3 days off) Work week: Full Time - Approximately 40+ hours per week during shipping season (approx 15 March - 15 January). Assist with physical inventory. Willingness to be delivery driver on truck trips to ports or cover for others, doing so will require overtime hours. Minimum Requirements: Must possess a valid driver's license. Must be able to obtain a Valid Michigan Chauffeurs drivers license and current Medical card. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to be flexible with hours as the maritime industry is a fluid and always changing environment.
