The Arctic Research Foundation (ARF) is a non-profit, charitable organization that is spearheading the development of innovative scientific infrastructure in the Canadian Arctic. Our state-of-the-art research vessels and self-powered mobile laboratories are enabling efficient and cutting-edge research in the region. We collaborate with governments, universities, and other research institutions that require access to advanced infrastructure for their program initiatives. Furthermore, we work closely with Arctic Indigenous peoples to ensure that our projects are informed by and respectful of the diverse cultures and perspectives in the North. Position Overview The Arctic Research Foundation (ARF) is seeking an experienced Vessel Superintendent to oversee the day-to-day technical, operational, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of ARF’s fleet of research vessels. Working closely with ARF’s Fleet Manager, vessel Masters and crew, contractors, classification societies, Transport Canada, and clients, the Vessel Superintendent will be responsible for ensuring ARF vessels are properly maintained, crewed, compliant, and operationally ready to safely and efficiently carry out scheduled research and commercial operations. The role requires a practical, hands-on individual who is comfortable working both aboard vessels and in an office environment. The ideal candidate will live in or near Halifax, NS, and be willing to travel and work aboard ARF vessels as required . Key Responsibilities Vessel Operations Monitor vessel readiness and ensure outstanding technical or operational issues are addressed before mobilization. Assist Fleet Manager to coordinate bunkering, provisioning, stores, spare parts, waste disposal, and other services. Assist Fleet Manager with voyage and mobilization planning as required. Assist Fleet Manager to coordinate vessel mobilizations and demobilizations for research and commercial projects. Work with clients and project teams to integrate scientific and project equipment aboard the vessel. Assist with planning deck layouts, lifting operations, winches, A-frames, crane other equipment. Attend the vessel during mobilizations, repairs, inspections, and dockings as required. Vessel Maintenance and Technical Oversight Oversee the vessels’ planned maintenance program. Work closely with the Master and Chief Engineer to identify, prioritize, and resolve maintenance and technical issues. Monitor condition of machinery, maintenance schedules, running hours, defects, and outstanding repairs. Obtain quotes and assist with purchasing equipment, parts, and services. Maintain appropriate spare-parts and consumables inventories. Assist with planning and supervising refits, drydocking’s, repairs, upgrades, and vessel modifications. Ensure technical documentation, equipment manuals, service reports, certificates, and maintenance records are properly maintained. Support the continued implementation and management of the vessels’ planned maintenance system. Regulatory Compliance Assist Fleet Manager in maintaining the vessel in compliance with Transport Canada, Class, and other applicable regulatory requirements. Track vessel certificates, inspections, surveys, and expiry dates. Coordinate and prepare for Transport Canada and class inspections and surveys. Work with the vessels’ crew to address deficiencies, survey findings, and outstanding regulatory items. Assist with maintaining the vessels’ Safety Management System and required records. Ensure lifesaving, firefighting, navigation, communications, and other critical equipment is maintained and serviced as required.
