Vessel Planning Manager, Night
ConfidentialThe Vessel Planning Manager, Night will provide management-level technical and planning-related capabilities to support terminal operational improvements, new facility planning, strategic plan implementation, and to support division management in planning, implementing, and documenting divisional activities. This role oversees vessel planning execution, coordinates with marine operations, terminal operations, and terminal customers, and ensures vessel plans are optimized to meet productivity, safety, and service objectives. The Vessel Planning Manager provides leadership and guidance to vessel planners while maintaining operational continuity during night shift operations. Essential Responsibilities: Lead night shift vessel planning activities for container vessel operations. Lead, coach, and develop vessel planning staff during the night shift. Establish work priorities and ensure effective shift coverage. Set and communicate performance goals. Lead, develop, and maintain safe and effective stowage procedures across terminals. Work closely with Terminal Management to standardize vessel operations and optimize use of planning resources. Create and maintain excellent relationships with terminal management and shipping lines. Research and resolve errors and billing discrepancies as needed. Work closely with supporting departments to ensure all deadlines are met. Follow through on new business opportunities by outlining a development program plan including initial layout concepts; market assessments; permitting, design, schedule, and cost requirements. Engage and manage in-house and consultant resources as necessary so an informed decision to move forward and pursue an opportunity is developed and vetted before implementation. Act as a resource to support regional managers when there is a need for divisional support. Examples include providing technical support when terminal improvements are being done as a lease requirement, determining approval or permitting needs for potential improvement projects initiated by SSA Marine, helping to develop terminal-specific operating plans, maintenance and repair checklists, etc. Other Duties as assigned. Requirements: Required qualifications: Undergraduate degree in planning or other related field from an accredited college or university. 10+ years of planning experience in the port/maritime industry, demonstrating increasing responsibility for work products. Management experience in projects involving commercial marine terminal/facility development; road and rail infrastructure; site design and land use planning. Knowledge of state and federal permitting; environmental specialists; internal and outside stakeholders; finance strategy; grant writing; preparation of reports and documentation of actions taken. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities. Ability to work effectively under pressure. Desired qualifications: Postgraduate degree preferred. Experience working with major container shipping lines and vessel operators. Knowledge of vessel stability, dangerous goods regulations, and cargo securing requirements. Experience with Mainsail, Spinnaker, Navis N4, MACS3, SPARCS, or other vessel planning systems. Strong understanding of berth planning, crane allocation, and terminal productivity metrics. Experience managing multiple vessel operations simultaneously. Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience. Familiarity with labor relations and unionized work environments. Supervisory Responsibilities: Yes- Vessel Planners Work environment: Office environment; exposure to computer screens. Ability to work night shift with flexibility. 5 days in-office work requirement. *Remote/hybrid arrangements are not available for this position*.
