This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV position in the Traffic Services unit. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as crew leader on the interstate sign crew. This position is stationed in Forsyth County, but work will be performed across all counties in Division 9. This position is responsible for erecting, maintaining, and replacing Type A & B ground-mounted signs on all Interstate systems in Division 9, in compliance with NCDOT Standards. In addition, this position will be subject to 24-hour emergency response for the repairs of damaged regulatory signs, installation/maintenance of emergency detours, and snow & ice removal. The employee in this position must possess an intermediate level of experience in the operation of a digger derrick truck, sign truck with attachments, and aerial lift truck. Must be able to properly install or manage the installation of temporary traffic control as needed, in accordance with NCDOT Standards. This employee must have the ability to plan and carry out assigned projects independently and must be able to communicate effectively with various people across multiple organizations, as well as with the public. Additional Expectations:
This position must apply safety philosophy to all operations. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on work sites including night work, height, highway traffic and traversing rough terrain in performing necessary work. Ability to supervise activities of lower-level employees and instruct them in proper work methods in the installation, repair, and maintenance of signs
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Safety-toed shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC08 $39,244 - $68,679
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience supervising a Sign Installation and Maintenance crew.
- Experience operating a sign truck with attachments.
- Experience in planning the daily activities of a work crew.
- Experience with MUTCD Standards and Roadway Specifications in laying out traffic control signage, including Regulatory, Warning, and Horizontal Alignment with Speed Advisories.
- Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
