Description of Work

This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV in the Forsyth County Maintenance department in Winston-Salem, NC. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various pieces of equipment, including an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, roller, sweeper, skid steer, backhoe, and various others. This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers. This position will respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work.
Additional Expectations:
Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing. Must be able to effectively communicate the English language. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.
This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Safety-toed shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC08 / $39,244 - $68,679
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations, as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
