NCDOT is looking for a highly motivated individual looking for a position with the potential of career advancement. This position will provide all state benefits including paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance, and retirement.
This posting is for a Transportation Worker II in the Traffic Paint Unit located in Stanly County. The position will serve on a paint crew. Duties include installing and maintaining centerline pavement markings, edge line pavement markings, stop bars, pedestrian crossing lines, painted arrows, school markings and other types of pavement markings. This position will install and maintain heat-in-place pavement markings. Shall possess the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of pavement markings and other traffic control devices. This position may be subject to on-call for many types of traffic-related emergencies after regular hours. Position will be able to operate a medium duty truck as well as variety of hand and power tools. This position requires working in a variety of weather conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, paint, traffic, and heavy construction. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to understand and follow both oral and written instructions. Shall comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safe work environment. Safety toe shoes required.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement is required for this position. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
You do not have to have a degree to qualify for this position. Applicants with at least two years of related experience are highly encouraged to apply.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 33,902.00 – 59,327.00
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience working on pavement marker/delineator crew, special marking crew, or other traffic services operation
- Experience in at least two pieces of equipment - Paint truck, pre-line paint machine, asphalt distributor, asphalt maintainer, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, forklift, front end loader, lube truck, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck
- Experience in disassembling, cleaning and repairing spray devices and components parts for pavement marking machines
- Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures
- Experience operating a paint machine and maintaining sign equipment
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
