This posting is for a Transportation Worker II in the Stanly County Maintenance Unit. This role focuses on maintaining and repairing state-maintained roads in Stanly County. Daily work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt, clearing debris, assisting with drainage and pipe installation, and operating equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, forklifts, front end loader, rollers, skid steers, and sweepers. The job also involves manual labor and responding to emergencies like snow, ice, and downed trees. It requires working in difficult terrain and weather, lifting up to 50 lbs., and being available for nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call backs. Position is subject to emergency callback. Safety toe shoes are required.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

**Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade:  NC05      Salary Range: 33,902.00 – 59,327.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:  

  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
  • Experience in at least two pieces of equipment - asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, backhoe, crack sealing machine, force feed loader, forklift, front end loader, motor grader, skid steer, sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor excavator
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
