This Position functions as a Transportation Worker Level 2 within the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of manual and equipment operational work in the maintenance of highways in Forsyth County. Work includes operating various types of highway equipment such as a patch truck, dump truck, sweeper, roller, and skid steer. Work also includes installing traffic control devices, installing temporary erosion control devices, flagging traffic, crack sealing, asphalt patching, installing pipe culverts, operating hand and power tools, monitoring tasks performed by inmates, clearing right of way and responding to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call situations and scheduled night work.
Additional Expectations:
Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing. Must be able to effectively communicate the English language. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.
This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Safety-toed shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 / $33,902 - $59,327
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
- Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
- Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
- Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance, or asphalt patching.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
