Description of Work Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date. This position functions as a Level 2 Transportation Worker within the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of manual and equipment operational work in the maintenance of highways in Forsyth County. Work includes operating various types of highway equipment such as a patch truck, dump truck, sweeper, roller, and skid steer. Work also includes installing traffic control devices, installing temporary erosion control devices, flagging traffic, crack sealing, asphalt patching, installing pipe culverts, operating hand and power tools, monitoring tasks performed by inmates, clearing right of way and responding to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call situations and scheduled night work. Additional Expectations: Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing. Must be able to effectively communicate the English language. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Safety-toed shoes required. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As part of the hiring approval process, NCDOT will run a driver license check after conducting interviews, but prior to offering a position. Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles: No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.) If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver’s license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.
