Position will function as a Transportation Worker II in our Alamance County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in Alamance County. Routinely operates at least two pieces of equipment in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup. Employee must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the journey level for a small percentage of time. Employee must be able to operate medium dump truck safely. Skillin the safe use & care of assigned equipment, hand & power tools, & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Work may include lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Employee must have ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions.

Additional Expectations:

Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The employee must have the ability to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances. Safety toe footwear is needed for this position.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  : NC05, $33,902 - $59,327

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures.
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching
  • Experience with installation of erosion control devices
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.

Minimum Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
