The Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief will report to the Sign Shop in District 7, which includes the following counties: Barbour, Upshur, Lewis, Gilmer, Braxton, and Webster. Under limited supervision, an employee in this class supervises a crew of transportation workers who maintain and repair roadway signs. Key responsibilities include - Reviews work orders to determine the daily work schedule, required equipment, and materials; supervises and installs signs on breakaway supports in accordance with standards and specifications; fabricating signs and supports in accordance with fabrication details; maintaining state equipment; trains lower-level employees in the fabrication and installation of signs and supports, equipment operation and preventative maintenance, traffic control, and safety. Monitoring material inventories and communicating material usage and needs; monitors and evaluates the work performed and provides feedback to the crew and manager. May serve as a working shop leader. Operates a variety of heavy motorized maintenance equipment such as power graders, bulldozers, backhoes, boom mowers, track/rubber-tired excavators, and semi-trailers. Transports equipment throughout the state to construction or maintenance sites, and makes major repairs to roads and bridges. Performs major overhauls of gasoline and diesel-powered highway maintenance equipment. Performs advanced work in the operation of complex sign-making equipment or leads a crew in a district sign shop. Performs other related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). However, a Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief is excluded, and the applicant will not be placed within a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program.
The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.The Typical Duties and Responsibilities of this classification are dependent upon the area of assignment:

• Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
• Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
• Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
• Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
• Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
• Ability to climb high steel structures.
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Required Experience is dependent upon the area of assignment:
Crew Chief: Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway construction or roadway maintenance, or in bridge or structural steel construction comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
Crew Chief Experience Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
