State of West VirginiaNature of Work Disclaimer-this position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.” These positions are assigned to the District 6 Equipment Shop in Marshall County, but daily reporting locations will be: Brooke County Maintenance Headquarters, Brooke County; Marshall County Maintenance Headquarters, Marshall County; and the D6 Headquarters Equipment Shop, Marshall County. Applicants will perform maintenance, minor repairs, and minor overhaul on gasoline powered equipment. May work with components on diesel-powered equipment, drive equipment after repairs to test operation, and assist higher level mechanics in heavy equipment repairs. This work may involve operating machinery by hand that involves a great degree of strenuous activity. Operating heavy machinery in extreme conditions may be included in this level. Position could be required to lift up to 75 pounds or more. Performs other related work as required. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. In the area of assignment of Mechanic, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6)months of employment. Pay Grade 11H Tier 1 hourly rate: $18.3938 Examples of Work Perform maintenance, minor repairs, and minor overhaul on gasoline powered equipment. May work with components on diesel-powered equipment. Changes and repairs tires on vehicles and heavy equipment. Install windshields and door glass. Service components of chassis assembly. Repair hydraulic brake systems. Inspect vehicles for compliance with state regulations. Drives equipment after repairs to test operation. Assists higher level mechanics in heavy equipment repairs. Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment. Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required. In the area of assignment of Mechanic, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six(6) months of employment. Skills and Knowledge Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment. Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment. Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades. Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used. Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment. Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools. Ability to climb high steel structures. Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments. Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair. Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders). Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
