The Transportation Worker 1 Mechanic, under general supervision, performs entry-level repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation vehicles and all types of highway equipment in need of repair. Will perform minor maintenance on fleet equipment and vehicles, which includes, but is not limited to, changing or repairing tires, checking automotive fluids, checking/installing windshield wipers, and inspecting vehicles for compliance with state regulations. Helps to provide a safe work environment by keeping the garage area clean. Assists the higher-level mechanics with vehicle and heavy equipment repairs. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.
• Knowledge of general safety procedures.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
• Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
• Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment. Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
