Description of Work

This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I position in the Stokes County Maintenance Department. This employee supervises activities of a county maintenance shoulder/ditching crew or pavement maintenance crew; counsels and disciplines employees; manages expenditures; maintains work records, time sheets, job reports and inventory records; plans and adjusts work operations; trains employees; conducts performance reviews; interviews and recommends new staff; ensures equipment is maintained; and investigates public complaints/inquiries. Work assignments include grading, patching, pavement maintenance, emergency response to cleanup of spills and debris, and clearing snow and ice.

Additional Expectations:
Position requires visual acuity, bending, walking and standing on uneven terrain and the ability to safely and repeatedly lift and carry 80 lbs. Must be able to effectively communicate the English language. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

Safety-toed shoes required.

This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC14 / $52,592.00-$92,036.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as maintenance equipment operation.
  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used.
  • Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations.
  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
  • Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
