About Us The Chesterfield County Transportation Department is a small but mighty team of professionals with diverse talents who work together to achieve a common goal: creating a safe, efficient, multimodal transportation network for residents and visitors to the county. The team designs, manages, and coordinates the scoping, development and delivery of roadway and bike/pedestrian projects with a total budget of over $500 million. The team also reviews new commercial and residential development in the county and provides recommendations to mitigate impacts to the existing network. The Transportation Department supports and collaborates with other county departments, regional organizations, and state agencies, making Chesterfield County Transportation a leader among local governments. Job Position Overview The part-time Transportation Senior Engineer will focus on managing multiple construction projects through inception, design, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation and construction. As part of the Transportation team, the Senior Engineer will also review and provide recommendations for both commercial and residential development plans. Responsibilities include managing schedules, budgets, and contracts; and working with county departments, state agencies, private developers, engineering consultants, regulatory agencies, and the general public. As a public servant and key member of this dynamic team, the Senior Engineer will handle a variety of work that keeps every day interesting and rewarding, with accomplishments that affect the daily lives of individuals who work, play, and reside in Chesterfield County. Perform other work as required. Candidate Qualifications Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, transportation planning, or related field; Four years of relevant experience in road construction/design; two years of land development review experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience required. Fundamentals of Engineering (EIT) certification or Professional Engineering (PE) license is preferred. Strong communication, interpersonal, and public relations skills are critical. Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points with the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by the applicant and presented at the time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of the interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI background check, and education/degree verification required. The candidate must possess: Sound and ethical engineering judgment Robust time management skills: the ability to take initiative, prioritize projects and meet deadlines Empathic, perceptive, and tactful customer service skills The ability to work both independently and collaboratively with the transportation team, public, and elected county officials Strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to communicate clearly and concisely The ability to attend and lead in-person Public Information Meetings Attention to detail in budgeting and accounting manners related to managing projects with budgets ranging from $50,000 to $50 million Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and GIS This is an hourly part-time position, not to exceed 28 hours a week, with remote work flexibility.
