POSITION SUMMARY The Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and supporting the company’s transportation safety and compliance programs. This position will ensure compliance with applicable Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and state regulations while promoting a strong culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. The Safety Manager will work closely with drivers, transportation leadership, insurance providers, and regulatory agencies to minimize risk, maintain compliance, and support safe and efficient transportation operations. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Recruit, screen, and review driver applicants to ensure compliance with company and regulatory requirements. Assist with new driver orientation, onboarding, and safety training. Maintain accurate and up-to-date driver qualification files, vehicle records, and other required transportation documentation. Support driver retention, performance management, and disciplinary processes as needed. Coordinate DOT-required physical examinations, drug and alcohol testing, and related compliance requirements. Develop, coordinate, and facilitate driver safety training programs and safety incentive/bonus programs. Organize and conduct the annual Driver Safety Awards program. Monitor changes to federal and state transportation laws and regulations and communicate applicable updates to drivers and management. Research, interpret, and ensure compliance with FMCSA and DOT regulations. Monitor and maintain CSA scores and identify opportunities for improvement. Maintain accurate accident records, investigations, and required reporting documentation. Work proactively to identify potential safety risks and implement preventative measures to reduce accidents, injuries, and liability. Partner with the company’s insurance carrier regarding safety initiatives, claims, accident investigations, and loss prevention. Develop, maintain, and update transportation safety policies and procedures to ensure continued regulatory compliance. Conduct safety audits and inspections as necessary. Monitor driver compliance with Hours of Service (HOS), Electronic Logging Device (ELD), and other applicable safety requirements. Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of sensitive driver and safety-related information. Attend industry workshops, training sessions, and regulatory updates to remain current on transportation safety requirements and best practices. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS 2–5 years of experience in transportation, logistics, fleet operations, safety, or a related field preferred. Strong knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations and compliance requirements. Working knowledge of Hours of Service (HOS) regulations. Experience with Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), driver qualification files, telematics, and/or transportation safety auditing software. Previous experience with a Transportation Management System (TMS) preferred. Experience or knowledge of over-the-road commercial transportation and driver operations preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational and time-management skills with strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and other standard business software. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Valid driver's license and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) required, as periodic travel may be necessary. Ability to respond to occasional after-hours transportation or safety matters. A company cell phone will be provided.
