Under general supervision, prepares planning studies, development analyses, data analyses, market studies, and maps. Reviews the design and layout of development projects including the conformance with zoning, design, and planning standards. Represents the Planning Commission in public meetings and presentations. Depending upon the nature of the job performed, may do the following: Prepares GIS maps and associated data, GIS programming, and GIS web-based design and programming in the context of city planning OR Analyzes and prepares streetscape, transportation, and infrastructure plans; Conceptually designs streetscape improvements OR Reviews architectural and site plans; Conceptually designs building and sites for city planning purposes. Performs related duties as required.
Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Public Administration, or related field from a four-year accredited college or university required. Two years of full-time paid experience in Urban Planning, Architecture, or closely related field required. (Substitution: Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or related field may substitute for experience.) In addition to the above qualifications, the following qualifications will be required, depending on the nature of the job performed:
GIS Specialist: GIS certification from an accredited university required. One year of full-time paid experience in GIS map and data preparation, including, within the context of city planning, GIS programming and GIS web-based program and design required.
Streetscape Transportation Specialist: Successful completion of at least 3 college-level courses in landscape architecture or architecture required. One year of full-time paid professional experience in streetscape, transportation, or infrastructure planning.
Urban Design Specialist: Successful completion of at least 3 college-level courses in urban design and/or architectural design required. One year of full-time paid experience in urban design or architecture required.
Overview
The City of Cleveland is seeking a highly motivated Transportation Planner. The Transportation Planner will support implementation of Cleveland Moves, the city’s multimodal transportation plan, and support the City’s shared mobility program (shared bikes and scooters). The Transportation Planner will work on several programs, policies, and initiatives to increase transportation choice and access, improve roadway safety and comfort, and help advance the City’s decarbonization goals for the transportation sector. The Transportation Planner will join the cross-departmental Mobility Team working to advance Mayor Bibb’s vision of a city where residents can meet all their needs within a 15-minute walk, bike ride, or transit ride.
The Transportation Planner will report to the Senior Active Transportation Planner in the City Planning Commission.

The transportation planner will be based in Cleveland’s City Planning Commission and will work as part of a cross-departmental functional team, the city’s Mobility Team, to engage, design, implement, and evaluate improvements to Cleveland’s transportation network.
The Mobility Team is a cross-departmental team of planners, engineers, and project coordinators that are focused on creating safer, more comfortable, more convenient, and more accessible ways for Clevelanders to get around.
