Job Responsibilities

Directs the project development staff in the preparation of highway safety projects.

Directs the safety project managers in the selection, contract preparation, coordination and review of safety projects.


Oversees the development of the preparation and design of projects for the Rural Road Safety Program.


Conducts meetings with public officials and/or the general public related to the design and construction of safety projects.


Prepares correspondence and engineering studies related to the design and construction of safety projects.


Manages project funding and budgets and coordinates with the Traffic Program Controls section to ensure program funds are programmed per the STIP.


Assures employees have adequate training and resources to efficiently manage, design, and let projects to contracts.


Conducts special projects as required by the Director of Traffic Engineering or State Traffic Safety Engineer. Acts on behalf of State Traffic Safety Engineer as necessary.


Signs and seals plans as necessary.


Assists in the evaluation of roadway segments within the Rural Road Safety Program and recommends design safety improvements.
Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering and six (6) years of engineering work experience. Necessary Special Requirement: Registration as a Professional Engineer by the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
