The Opportunity:
The Transportation Engineer-in-Training will support a wide range of multi-modal transportation projects, including transportation plans, traffic impact assessments, parking studies and more. The primary responsibilities will be to assist our Regional Leads and other Transportation Engineering and Planning staff with various elements of transportation projects including traffic modeling, capacity analysis, data collection, research, and report writing.
What you bring to WATT:
- Post-secondary education in the field of Engineering (ideally with a transportation focus), and either a registered member or on a defined path to become an engineer-in-training member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, as well as strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Ability to work on several projects at one time for multiple project managers, as well as work independently in the field.
- Transportation-related planning or engineering experience or familiarity with municipal development / planning processes would be considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of transportation related software such as Synchro/SimTraffic, SIDRA, Vistro/Visum/Vissim and HCS is considered an asset.
- Experience with key technical manuals applicable in AB would be considered an asset, including some or all of the following: TAC Geometric Design Guide, Calgary Design Guidelines for Subdivision Servicing, Calgary Complete Streets Manual, Albert Highway Geometric Design Guide, NACTO Design Guides, and MMCD.
- A valid AB Drivers’ License is required. Access to a personal vehicle would be considered an asset, as this position may also be asked to support project data collection in the field. Mileage expenses are reimbursed.
- Able to lift and carry traffic counting equipment (up to approximately 18kg / 40lbs), as well as work outside in all typical Alberta weather conditions.
What you will do at WATT:
- Primarily supporting the development of transportation plans and analyses, including assisting with transportation/traffic impact assessments, network and intersection analysis using modelling software, multi-modal road safety analysis, parking studies, and preliminary assessment of pedestrian and signal warrants. As feasible, this role may also support active transportation planning and facility design, complete street design, transit planning, and functional road design.
- Assisting with preparation of written materials and graphics to support projects and proposals, including letters, memos, and reports.
- Field work including data collection and site inspections. These may include manual intersection counts for periods of up to four hours at a time, as well as setting up, monitoring and taking down traffic count equipment, including road tubes, controllers and video cameras.
- Data entry and preliminary analysis/verification of collected transportation survey information in MS Excel, as well as viewing and tabulating information from intersection recorded video.
- Assisting project managers with administrative tasks, such as file set up, project coordination and logistics.
- Day trips within the Calgary, AB region may be required.
- Other duties as required.
