Nature of Work

The Transportation DMV Unit Manager will report to the Driver Services Division in Kanawha County. The incumbent in this position, under general supervision, performs advanced level supervisory work overseeing activities of DMV Specialists and DMV Technicians in specific units in the Division of Motor Vehicles headquarters.   Responsible for planning work assignments and schedules, completion of annual performance evaluations, approval of leave, and disciplinary actions as required.  May be responsible for maintenance of reports relating to the specific assigned unit.  Other duties as required.


Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Interprets and apples state and federal guidelines, motor vehicle laws, rules, and regulations
• Informs and advises employees of department, division and unit policy and procedure changes
• Responsible for planning, assigning, and coordinating the work of employees
• Trains new employees and implements the policies, procedures, and regulations
• Reviews and monitors the work of employees and programs and compiles reports.
• Answers questions and assists in resolving issues for employees
• Work with vendors, other agencies, and outside organizations to gather or communicate information or coordinate work.  
• Conducts employee performance evaluations, approves leave, recommends hiring, disciplinary actions, and other personnel actions as required.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.

Skills and Knowledge

•  Knowledge of state and federal guidelines, motor vehicle law, rules, and regulations
•  Ability to interpret rules and regulations
•  Ability to plan, assign, and coordinate the work of employees 
•  Excellent communication and presentation skills
•  Knowledge of computer skills to navigate the DMV systems.
•  Ability to apply, train, and instruct employees in the application of laws, rules, and regulations
•  Ability to conduct research using multiple database or application resources
•  Ability to design and communicate clear expectations.

Minimum Requirements

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university

  • Substitution: Additional experience as described below may substitute for the required training on a year for year basis.

 REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in a lead worker or supervisory capacity.

  • Substitution: College credit from an accredited college or university, business school, or vocational training may be substituted through an established formula for the required experience.
