Job Overview
The United States Postal Service is seeking a disciplined, safety-first, and highly precise Trailer Spotter to anchor our logistics yard and distribution center operations. In this critical, active role, you will be the primary operator responsible for managing commercial truck traffic, maneuvering large trailers, and orchestrating drop-and-hook procedures across a high-volume facili

ty footprint. Utilizing specialized yard tractors (hostlers), you will shift heavy freight carriers and empty containers systematically between localized storage stalls and active warehouse docks. If you take pride in executing sharp spatial maneuvers, maintaining structural order in high-traffic hubs, and want a secure federal path with unparalleled stability, this position is your next step.
Key Responsibilities
• Operate industrial yard hostlers and spotter trucks safely to hitch, move, and unhitch heavy commercial trailers across the facility yard
• Back trailers seamlessly into tight, high-velocity loading dock bays, maximizing space alignment and matching container doors to facility seals
• Attach and disconnect trailer air hoses, locking pins, safety chains, and electrical lines smoothly while following strict physical safety guidelines
• Perform comprehensive daily pre-operational vehicle checklists, reporting brake, steering, tire, or mechanical defects immediately
• Coordinate constantly via two-way wireless radios or digital logistics screens with dock clerks, dispatchers, and plant managers
• Verify trailer classification numbers, commercial carrier labels, and secure seal codes against automated yard tracking databases
What Success Looks Like
Success as a Trailer Spotter balances rapid operational turnaround with a completely accident-free performance. Top performers exhibit flawless defensive driving and exceptional spatial awareness, adapting smoothly to changing outdoor visibility, slick pavement, and crowded loading pathways. You will stand out in this position by predicting terminal switch needs ahead of schedule, preventing yard traffic bottlenecks, and ensuring the sorting floor remains constantly supplied with incoming freight.
Requirements and Qualifications
• Must be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident alien
• Must be at least eighteen years old or sixteen years old with a high school diploma
• Ability to pass a mandatory federal background investigation, a drug screening, and a physical fitness evaluation
• Must possess a valid State Driver's License; a commercial driver's license (CDL Class A) or verified heavy equipment spotting experience is highly preferred
• Strong depth perception and backing proficiency to navigate heavy commercial vehicles through strict layout clearances
• Clear verbal communication skills in English to safely relay transport safety warnings and yard movement updates via radio channels
Benefits
• Exceptional starting hourly wages with guaranteed regular step increases and rewarding overtime potential
• Premium federal employee health benefits including comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance selections
• Guaranteed long-term retirement security through the federal pension network and matching thrift savings accounts
• Robust paid leave systems allowing you to accumulate personal vacation days, sick hours, and paid federal holidays
• Detailed on-the-job machine training, vehicle orientation programs, and ongoing industrial workplace safety certifications
• Direct internal promotion pathways to transition into highway freight transport, terminal logistics routing, or operations management
