Traffic Control Design Specialist
CongruexJob Title: Traffic Control Technician Reports To: Manager, Traffic Control Compensation: $20 - $26/hr. + Full Benefits Job Summary: Traffic Control Design Specialists focus on planning and managing traffic flow in construction, maintenance, and special event zones . They develop Traffic Control Plans (TCPs) that comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other state or federal guidelines. Key responsibilities include: Job Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to): Designing safe and efficient work zone layouts for motorists, pedestrians, and workers Selecting and positioning traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, signs, and arrow panels Evaluating work zone impacts on traffic flow and mobility, including nighttime operations Applying engineering judgment to balance safety, cost, and traffic efficiency Coordinating with local agencies and stakeholders to ensure compliance and effective implementation The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) offers specialized training for TCDS. Courses typically cover: Fundamental principles of temporary traffic control (TTC) Human factors and driver behavior Component parts of a TTC zone Traffic control devices and their proper use TTC design strategies, including positive protection and roadside design Legal aspects and compliance with standards The TCDS course is 18 hours long , available online, and recommended for traffic engineers, technicians, and consultants. Certification usually requires passing an exam and is valid for four years Required Skills & Qualifications: High school diploma or GED (preferred). Valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Certification as a Traffic Control Technician (TCT) or Flagger (e.g., ATSSA, NSC, or state-specific). Ability to stand for long periods and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Strong understanding of road safety regulations and signage standards. Good communication and situational awareness. Preferred Skills & Qualifications: Experience in construction, roadwork, or traffic management. Ability to read and interpret traffic control plans and safety diagrams. Familiarity with local Department of Transportation (DOT) standards and guidelines. Physical strength to lift and place traffic equipment. Physical Demands & Work Environment: Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach. Ability to lift, push, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds regularly. Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including working at heights, in confined spaces, and on uneven terrain. Use of hands and arms for handling tools, equipment, and controls. Visual and auditory acuity required to operate equipment and ensure safety in field environments. May involve long periods of driving between job sites. Work Environment: Work is primarily performed outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow. Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and potentially hazardous materials and environments. May work near moving mechanical parts or in high-traffic areas. Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, reflective vests, and steel-toed boots. Irregular hours, overtime, and on-call availability may be required based on operational needs.
