Shipping Assistant

NOVELTY MANUFACTURING Job Title: Shipping Assistant Reports To: Shipping Manager Status: Non-Exempt JOB SUMMARY Assists in the timely distribution of all inbound and outbound shipments, performs day to day activities of the warehouse, and other job-related functions. Requires the ability to work effectively and harmoniously with people. MAJOR DUTIES Assembles shipments under direction of the Shipping Manager. Enters UPS and Fed-Ex shipments into computer. Coordinates re-pack efforts and special labeling. Reviews daily influx of orders with Shipping Manager or the Manager’s Assistant. Reviews and comprehends customer manuals/ logistics details and shipping requirements to achieve 100% compliance and avoid fines. Helps manage customer online routing/logistics websites. Does quarterly spot checks and reports discrepancies. RESPONSIBILITIES IN ADDITION TO MAJOR DUTIES Loads and unloads trucks, locates and transports materials around warehouse. Assists Marketing and Sales Department in assembling show sample packages. Maintains all forklifts, shipping equipment, trash dumpster etc. Maintains and cleans company grounds. Removes finished goods from production area and wraps skids as needed; removes trash and scrap as needed. Makes pick-ups and runs errands as needed and directed by Shipping Manager. Follows all safety procedures and uses good judgment in execution of duties and responsibilities. Assists Production during busy periods. Assists other areas as needed especially in off-season. Exhibits positive attitude and performs as a team member. Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Requires high school level education (or equivalent). Must have the ability to use basic mathematics. EXPERIENCE Requires six months to one year of general labor experience. RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACCURACY Errors when picking orders cost Novelty and our Customers time and money. This can have a negative effect on our reputation. Errors picking orders will occur, but keeping them to a minimum is our goal. Become familiar with the attached 3- Step Verification Process flow chart. This will help to keep errors to a minimum. WORKING WITH OTHERS Works independently as well as within a group. RESPONSIBILITY FOR TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT Responsible for preventing loss of materials, product, tools or equipment. Responsible for enhancing production effectiveness and improving product quality. PHYSICAL DEMANDS & DEXTERITY Performs routine tasks at moderate speed, to meet quantity and accuracy goals. Operates a computer or keypad device. Physical requirements place moderate demands on the fingers, arms, torso, legs and feet; a moderate degree of standing, climbing and walking and a significant degree of lifting or moving weight of 50 lbs. or less.(Assistance provided if lifting over 50 lbs. ) MENTAL DEMANDS Continually needs to concentrate, frequently performs multiple tasks and occasionally needs to make quick decisions. Occasionally deals with a diversity of problems and distractions that interfere with planned work. Able to resume work if distraction occurs. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Most work is assigned on a daily or weekly basis. Must be self-motivated and able to work unsupervised. CONTACT WITH OTHERS Continually deals with employees inside the department. Frequently deals with employees outside the department. Greets and assists drivers picking up or delivering freight. Greets and assists customers picking up orders. OPERATION OF MACHINES & EQUIPMENT Must have basic skill level in using the computer, operating a pallet wrapper and bundle strapper. Must be proficient in operating a forklift. If not proficient in the above, must be willing to learn. HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS Minor potential for occurrence of minor cuts, abrasions or bruises. Low potential of exposure to hazardous materials, broken bones and other more serious injuries. WORKING CONDITIONS Seasonal exposure to dust, dirt, heat, cold and noise.
