Service Assistant (Shop Helper)

Job Summary: The Service Assistant supports daily shop operations by assisting trailer technicians with repairs and maintenance, maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment, and providing support with inventory, parts, deliveries, and other operational needs. This hands-on position is ideal for someone who is dependable, takes initiative, can adapt to changing priorities, and enjoys working in a team-oriented environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: · ASSISTING TRAILER TECHNICIANS: Assist trailer technicians with routine repairs, maintenance, and inspections. Support troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and structural trailer issues. Prepare tools, parts, and equipment for repairs. Help organize workstations and maintain efficient workflow. · SHOP CLEANING & MAINTENANCE: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment. Perform routine housekeeping duties, including sweeping, mopping, cleaning work areas, and keeping walkways clear of debris and obstructions. Assist with proper disposal of scrap materials and waste, organize and return shared tools and equipment to designated storage areas, and help maintain cleanliness of outdoor work areas. Assist with basic shop and facility maintenance as needed. · END OF DAY SHUTDOWN: Ensure that the shop is properly shut down at the end of each workday, which includes but is not limited to: turning off equipment and tools, cleaning and organizing workstations and repair areas, properly storing tools and equipment to ensure they are in good condition for the next day, ensuring that all hazardous materials are stored safely and that any potential safety issues are addressed, ensuring that doors are closed and locked. · INVENTORY MANAGEMENT: Assist with service truck inventory counts. Clean and organize parts and supplies in service trucks as needed. Provide assistance with warehouse inventory as needed. · DELIVERY ASSISTANCE: Pick up parts, tools, and supplies from vendors. Ensure that the correct items are received and/or delivered to the shop or job sites in a timely manner. Assist with loading and unloading parts and equipment. · SAFETY COMPLIANCE: Perform basic visual checks of tools and equipment before use and promptly report damage, malfunctions, or unsafe conditions. This includes checking tools, vehicles, and machinery for wear, damage, or malfunctions, and reporting any issues promptly. Assist with maintaining and organizing safety equipment and first aid supplies in the shop and service trucks. Help ensure the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper handling of tools and machinery. Follow safety guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. · ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED Requirements: · Prior experience in a mechanical or repair shop environment is preferred but not required · Strong interest in trailer maintenance and repair · Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn · Ability to work independently and take initiative while recognizing when assistance or direction is needed · Valid driver’s license, clean driving record and reliable transportation · Must be able to pass a DOT medical examiner’s physical · Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively · Positive attitude and strong communication skills · Eagerness to grow and develop within the company Physical Requirements: · Occasionally operate machinery, forkl…
