Description

  

The Retail Operations Manager is responsible for leading operational strategy and performance across all garden center locations. This role provides direction, prioritization, and oversight for core operational functions including inventory control, systems performance, safety, reporting, and facilities management.

Working closely with the Retail Operations Specialist, store leadership teams, and cross-functional partners, the Retail Operations Manager identifies opportunities to improve efficiency, standardize processes, and support scalable growth across the retail division. This position plays a key role in strengthening operational infrastructure, supporting new initiatives, and ensuring garden center teams have the systems and tools needed to operate effectively.

Operational Leadership

· Provide direction and oversight for retail operational systems, processes, and standards across all garden centers.

· Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, simplify workflows, and strengthen operational consistency across locations.

· Establish operational priorities for the Retail Operations Specialist and support execution of key initiatives.

· Partner with store leadership teams to address operational challenges and improve store performance.

· Ensure operational processes and documentation remain current and aligned with business needs.

Systems & Process Strategy

· Provide oversight for retail systems including POS platforms, operational tools, and external service partners.

· Collaborate with IT, Accounting, and external vendors to ensure systems support the operational needs of the retail division.

· Lead evaluation and implementation of new operational tools or systems when appropriate.

· Guide the development of standardized operational procedures and best practices across stores

Safety, Facilities & Compliance

· Provide leadership and oversight for retail safety initiatives, ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable regulations.

· Partner with store leadership to support safe operations, facility upkeep, and preventative maintenance standards.

· Oversee operational planning for facility improvements, equipment needs, and capital projects.

Inventory & Financial Operations

· Provide strategic oversight of inventory control practices to support accurate inventory and strong margin performance.

· Partner with Buying, Accounting, and store leadership to address inventory discrepancies and operational challenges.

· Support financial and operational planning by monitoring key operational metrics and identifying trends or opportunities.

Data, Reporting & Performance Insights

· Monitor operational performance across garden centers using sales, inventory, and operational metrics.

· Translate operational data into actionable insights that support decision-making for the retail division.

· Partner with retail leadership to identify opportunities to improve store performance and operational efficiency.

Retail Growth & Strategic Initiatives

· Support operational planning for new store openings, acquisitions, and expansion initiatives. 

· Provide operational and on-site leadership during store transitions, ensuring systems, processes, and vendor relationships are successfully established.

· Contribute to long-term retail strategy by identifying operational improvements that support scalable growth.



· Experience & Education: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, retail management, or a related field preferred. 5+ years of retail operations or multi-unit retail management experience.

· Technical Skills: Experience with retail POS systems, ERP platforms, and Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel).

· Leadership & Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence teams across multiple locations. Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with store teams and corporate partners.

· Problem Solving & Strategic Thinking: Ability to analyze operational challenges and develop practical, scalable solutions. Strong organizational and prioritization skills in a fast-paced environment.

· Flexibility & Travel: Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel to Gardener’s Supply Garden Centers as needed. Occasional weekend or extended hours may be required during peak retail periods.

· Industry Knowledge: Experience in garden center, horticulture, or seasonal retail environments is a plus.

Salary Description
$88,000 to $95,000 per year
