Restaurant Development & Design Project Coordinator
Sunny'sWe are currently developing our newest location at The Domain in Austin, and we are looking for a motivated student or emerging professional to work directly with Sunny’s Director of Development throughout the build-out process. The Opportunity This is not a traditional internship where you spend the semester observing from the sidelines. You will be directly involved in bringing a restaurant from concept to opening. Working closely with the Director of Development, you will serve as Sunny’s on-the-ground project representative in Austin, helping oversee the design, construction, vendor coordination, purchasing, and finishing details of the new location. The position offers hands-on exposure to interior design, architecture, construction, project management, procurement, business operations, and hospitality development, all within a single real-world project. You will see firsthand how drawings, finishes, contractor proposals, budgets, design decisions, and construction ultimately come together to create a finished restaurant. What You’ll Do Assist with the development and build-out of Sunny’s new location at The Domain Visit the project site regularly and document construction progress Coordinate with contractors, trades, vendors, designers, and suppliers Request, organize, and compare multiple contractor and vendor quotes Help evaluate pricing, scope of work, materials, and project alternatives Monitor ongoing work to ensure it aligns with approved plans and design intent Perform quality-control walkthroughs and identify items requiring correction Provide regular project updates, photos, measurements, and field information to the Director of Development Assist with interior design decisions, finish selections, furniture, fixtures, artwork, décor, and styling Source products and materials that meet Sunny’s design, durability, budget, and operational requirements Help solve the inevitable field conditions and design challenges that come with building a restaurant Assist with final installation, punch-list completion, and preparation of the restaurant for opening Who We’re Looking For This position is especially well suited for students studying: Interior Design Architecture Construction Science/Management Project Management Related Design Fields The ideal candidate is someone who: Has a strong eye for design and attention to detail Is organized, dependable, and comfortable taking initiative Can communicate professionally with contractors and vendors Is comfortable visiting an active construction site Can identify when something does not match drawings, specifications, or design intent Is willing to research solutions rather than simply identify problems Has an interest in understanding both the creative and business sides of development Is comfortable working independently while maintaining frequent communication with the Director of Development Previous construction or professional design experience is not required. Curiosity, judgment, organization, and willingness to learn matter more. Why This Role Is Different Most early-career positions expose you to one small piece of a project. This position gives you visibility into almost the entire process. You may be reviewing a finish selection one day, comparing contractor bids the next, walking the construction site to inspect work, sourcing furniture or décor, discussing a field modification, or helping prepare the restaurant for opening. By the end of the project, you will have participated in the actual development of a commercial hospitality space and gained experience spanning design, architecture, construction, procurement, budgeting, vendor management, and business operations.
