ROAD & RAIL SERVICESRailroad Switchman / Conductor Road & Rail Services Location: Greensburg, IN Starting Pay: $21.50 per hour Job Type: Full-Time | On-Site Work Hands-On in Railroad Operations Road & Rail Services is hiring a Railroad Switchman / Conductor to join our operation in Greensburg, Indiana . This position works directly with railcars, track switches, and rail crews to help safely move and position equipment throughout the facility. This is an active railroad job-not a warehouse position. You'll spend much of your shift outdoors, walking the rail yard, operating track switches, coupling and uncoupling railcars, communicating with the locomotive operator, and helping coordinate safe rail movements. Previous railroad experience is preferred but not required. Training will be provided to dependable candidates who demonstrate strong safety awareness, good communication skills, and the ability to learn railroad operating procedures. Experience in railroad operations, manufacturing, construction, heavy equipment, transportation, logistics, agriculture, industrial operations, or other physically demanding outdoor work may transfer well to this position. What You'll Be Doing As a Switchman / Conductor, you will work closely with other members of the rail crew to coordinate safe and efficient railcar movements. Daily responsibilities may include: Assist with switching, spotting, pulling, and positioning railcars Throw and line manual track switches for planned rail movements Couple and uncouple railcars as required Communicate movement instructions to locomotive operators Use two-way radios and approved hand signals to communicate with crew members Verify tracks and routes are properly aligned before rail movements occur Observe railcar movement and maintain safe clearance from moving equipment Inspect tracks, switches, railcars, and work areas for visible hazards or defects Apply or remove required railcar securement devices Confirm railcars are safely positioned and secured Climb rail equipment when necessary to perform assigned duties Walk throughout the rail yard over ballast, tracks, and uneven surfaces Maintain constant awareness of locomotives, railcars, vehicles, equipment, and coworkers Immediately report damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, or operational concerns Follow all Road & Rail Services, customer, and railroad safety procedures Properly wear and maintain all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) What We're Looking For Railroad switching requires employees who can remain alert, communicate clearly, and follow established procedures every time. Qualified candidates should have: Valid state-issued driver's license Reliable transportation to the Greensburg facility Strong safety awareness and situational judgment Ability to understand and follow detailed operating instructions Ability to communicate clearly by radio and in person Dependable attendance and punctuality Ability to work effectively as part of a railroad crew Willingness to learn railroad switching procedures Ability to perform physically demanding work throughout the shift Comfort working around moving railcars, locomotives, tracks, and industrial equipment Previous Switchman, Conductor, Brakeman, railroad, rail yard, manufacturing, heavy-equipment, or industrial experience is a plus. Physical & Outdoor Work Environment This position is performed primarily outdoors in an active railroad environment. Employees must be prepared to work in heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and other changing Indiana weather conditions . The job requires frequent walking and standing, including travel across railroad ballast and uneven surfaces. Employees must also be able to bend, reach, climb, and perform the physical activities necessary to operate switches, couple or uncouple equipment, and complete other switching duties.
