Department of Public Works Operations Specialist – Resource Management Division
The Public Works Operations Specialist serves as the operational backbone of the Resource Management Division within the Department of Public Works. This role ensures that the right materials, tools, equipment, and resources are in the right place at the right time—keeping projects moving, services uninterrupted, and customers supported.
Blending strategic scheduling with hands-on operational coordination, this position develops and manages detailed maintenance and project schedules, oversees procurement and inventory operations, and supports contract negotiations, vendor coordination, and ongoing vendor engagement. Serving as a key liaison with Procurement and external partners, the Specialist assists with contract compliance, pricing analysis, quote preparation, and purchasing processes to ensure cost-effective and timely acquisition of goods and services.
The Specialist plays a critical role in managing Work Management and Asset Management Systems, tracking milestones, monitoring budgets, and proactively resolving scheduling or logistical challenges. With a strong focus on inventory accuracy and operational readiness, this role oversees material forecasting, supply tracking, purchasing compliance, inventory audits, and resource allocation to ensure the Division can deliver reliable, high-quality public services.
Equally important, the Public Works Operations Specialist champions exceptional customer service by reviewing work orders for accuracy, ensuring proper billing for labor and materials, communicating project status updates clearly, and serving as a trusted liaison between Division Leadership, internal teams, vendors, and the public.
This position requires a detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, uses data to drive decisions, anticipates operational needs, and continuously improves processes to enhance efficiency, fiscal responsibility, and service delivery. Regular in-person presence is required as an essential job function.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Duties are performed primarily in an office environment, with occasional travel to County buildings, worksites, outlying yards, and field environment. Hybrid remote work environment dependent upon Department discretion and business needs. May work in adverse weather conditions, possible exposure to people in stressful situations and hazardous situations, including close proximity to moving vehicles and traffic. Possible exposure to hazardous materials, such as antifreeze, lubricants, solvents, corrosives, fuels, and vapors. May require working after hours or modified shifts in the event of an emergency.
